Honorable Mentions Galore

I got word last week that my most recent submission to Writers of the Future, "Athletic Intelligence", about robots being allowed to race in the Boston Marathon, received Honorable Mention. This makes nine HMs to my name from this contest, plus one Semi-Finalist. Obviously I would rather have won, but what can you do? Honorable Mention means it was better than 90% of the submissions for that quarter and is likely good enough to get published somewhere else. Just not in WotF. Oh well, back to the drawing board. Still working on the latest draft of my story "The Night Farmer". Maybe this will be the one...

Publication in The Colored Lens

This week my story, Now We Are Stars was published in the Autumn 2025 issue of The Colored Lens, a speculative fiction magazine.

I love this story, and am thrilled to have a home for it. Inspired by my love of Mongolian rock music, this story is about a young woman who finds musical success with her folk-punk bandmates by incorporating a traditionally religious style of singing into her songs. Only when she returns to her small village does she learn that these choices have made her a pariah, even in her own home. Kai has to learn to reconcile her past "village girl" self with her new "punk rock" self to find the peace she's looking for.

The magazine is available through Amazon in either Kindle or print format. Find them here.

Story Sale!

I'm happy to announce that my short story, "Now We Are Stars" is under contract to be published in the Autumn 2025 edition of The Colored Lens.

I wrote this story several years ago after discovering Mongolian rock music (it's a thing, look it up). The music of bands like The Hu and Nine Treasures is filled with beautiful, melodic, traditional oriental instruments played over the top of heart pounding heavy metal riffs, and interspersed with Mongolian throat singing. The music is amazing and I was hooked from the very first riff. Being ignorant of throat singing at the time, my only prior exposure came from CDs of Buddhist monks who sit on Himalayan mountain tops chanting in the deep guttural music. So at the time, I thought throat singing might be a religious thing to them. This made me wonder if these music groups were committing some kind of blasphemy by using it in rock music. The answer is, of course not. But it sparked a story idea in mind, which eventually became, "Now We Are Stars".

This story won an Honorable Mention in the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future contest. I've been shopping it around ever since. I love this story, and am thrilled that The Colored Lens also saw the magic in it and decided to publish it.

The release date isn't set yet, and ordering options will be posted once the information is available.
