The Colored Lens
"Now We are Stars"
This story was inspired by my recent obsession with Mongolian rock music. Several years ago I discovered musical groups like The Hu and Nine Treasures and fell in love. Their music is the perfect blend of heavy rock music and the beautifully melodic sounds of traditional Asian music, with a little throat singing thrown in for good measure. The throat singing in particular fascinated me because, to that point, the only thing I knew about throat singing (or assumed anyway) was it's what Tibetan monks do on the sides of mountains. I thought it was a religious thing. So when I heard it in rock music, it made me wonder if these bands were violating some sacred music or something. The answer is no, of course not, but it set my mind spinning, wondering about a music group that really did borrow from their traditionally religious music to find fame and fortune.
This story is about a young woman who does just that, and finds monumental success with her folk-punk bandmates. Only when she returns home does she learn that her people, and especially her parents, are infuriated with her and the choices she's made. It's a story about finding oneself through music, and learning how to reconcile your past selves with your present and future selves.

Particular Passages: Decked Halls
"The Key to Christmas"
This story was inspired by a simple Christmas Tree ornament given to us by a neighbor several years ago. It was a little bronze skeleton key, which I found puzzling at first, because what do keys have to do with Christmas? This prompted my writer brain to say, "What is the key to Christmas"? I wrote this story in one sitting, sharing with our families that Christmas and not thinking anything else of it. When a friend told me about Knight Writing Press' Particular Passages anthologies series and their plans for a Christmas collection titled, Decked Halls, I knew I had just the story to submit. This anthology reads like a Hallmark marathon in book form. It's full of heart warming (and a few weird) tales of Christmas. It's available in digital or paperback format through Amazon.
Promptly Issue 2 (Summer 2013)
"Grandad"
My story "Grandad" was published by this online literary journal in 2013. It was based on the prompt: I saw my dead grandfather sipping chocolate milk early in the morning at the Cleveland airport. Unfortunately, the journal went out of publication before a third issue was released. Because the website is gone, and Promptly was online only, I've included the story in its entirety here. Enjoy!
